A type of preservative used in skincare and cosmetics to stop bacteria and mould from growing in products.

Parabens became controversial but current research from major health bodies suggests they're safe at the low levels used in cosmetics. That said, many brands now choose paraben free alternatives — both options can be perfectly fine.
